HARRISONBURG (WHSV) -- Now that Harrisonburg's Kmart is out of business, many are wondering what's next for the space.

There are no signs left on the store. It looks like things are officially closed for good. Workers are still gutting the building of shelves and fixtures. Most of it is ending up in dumpsters behind the building.

As things progress, one commercial real estate expert guesses a big transformation may be necessary for future businesses.

"I would guess that the Kmart space will be totally redeveloped, and I would sincerely doubt that building will be reused. I would guess that the entire land would be re-purposed probably for multiple users since it's such a fantastic location," shared Keith May of Cottonwood Commercial.

However, Brian Shull, Harrisonburg's Director of Economic Development, says there isn't any information available at this point regarding the future use of the site.
