WEYERS CAVE, Va. (WHSV) -- A summer camp this week is helping mold the next generation of scientists and engineers.

It's GEMS camp at Blue Ridge Community College. GEMS stands for Girls Embracing Mechatronics.

About 20 middle school girls are at the free camp this week thanks to a grant from the BRCC Educational Foundation. They're learning about wind power, generators and turbines.

They had the opportunity to put into practice what they learned with their own turbines!

"I've kind of been learning how wind turbines work, because we've been able to lift weights as we rotate the turbine and produce electricity," said seventh grader Lexi St. Clair.

"I've made a lot of friends and I've had a lot of fun getting to learn more about energy and different things," said Katie Elliott, also a seventh grader.

The girls will cap off the last day of camp Friday with presentations about what they've learned.
