AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- A 13-year-old girl died after falling 50 feet near the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Her name is not being released because she is underage.

The National Park Service said she was hiking with her family before she fell.

Curtis Sheets, a Chief with Wintergreen Fire and Rescue, was on the scene just hours after the incident.

"I've been here 14 years and I have never even known of this particular location to be popular for hiking and I have never known of any accident to have occurred here," said Sheets.

He said falls like this come from recreational climbing.

"Yes we do see falls but a fall like this is not very common," said Sheets.

Ranger Kurt Speers said the 13-year old girl and an 11-year old boy left their family to explore the cliff.

Speers said the two climbed to the top of the cliff where the girl lost her footing.

"This is not what we call recreational climbing with ropes and equipment. This is just juveniles out scrambling around on rocks, then losing their footing and unfortunately the consequences were pretty severe."

The girl later died at the UVA Medical Center.

Speers wants to prevent other tragedies like this from happening.

"We recommend people to stay on maintained trails and keep an eye on their children at all times," said Speers

Speers will interview other witnesses and so far no charges have been filed. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
