ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va -- Bath salts use is one of the fastest growing drug problems in our area. The synthetic drug causes hallucinations, violent behavior and can even kill you if you take too much. A woman nearly died while she was high on the drug.
Ashley Whitmer had been on bath salts for two months and while that may not seem like a long time to most people, she said it was enough for the drug to turn her life upside down.
Now, she is on the road to recovery and trying to get back on her feet.
“I wonder every day what the next day is gonna be for me,” said Ashley.
A few months back Ashley said she came close to losing everything because of bath salts.
“I went from almost 130 to 87 pounds.”
Aside from the weight, she almost lost her life.
“I never saw me being in this position that I am right now.”
In May, Ashley crashed her car into the Cargill building in Dayton while she was high on bath salts. She only remembers what happened before the crash.
“I remember being at the car wash that night.”
Then she remembered waking up in the hospital bed, surrounded by tubes.
“It scared me.”
She was on life support for three weeks and since then, Ashley has been in a wheelchair. Ashley's mom, Tammy, said doctors told her Ashley wasn't going to make it.
“She's a miracle,” said Tammy.
Now, Ashley is just taking baby steps, but that is a milestone for her.
“I'm so thankful that I came this far,” said Ashley.
Ashley still has a long road ahead of her, dealing with migraines and short term memory loss.
“I get frustrated with everything because I have to depend on everybody else and I can't do anything on my own anymore”
Her mom said what it was like to go through her daughter's recovery.
“It's just a shame that it took something like this to stop it,” said Tammy.
Tammy said this tragedy did not only affected Ashley.
“It affected all of us, our whole family. It's like a nightmare. It still is.”
For Ashley, it's a nightmare she wouldn't go through again.
"Seeing the results of what I went through because of bath salts, I wouldn't do it again," said Ashley.
Ashley said she lost more than 40 pounds when she was on the drug. The interesting thing is that she said at the time she thought she looked good.
Her mom said living through this is a miracle for Ashley. Doctors asked her mom to pull off the plug when she was on life support, but she didn't. Then Ashley woke up.
