Girls Take Home Prom Dresses Thanks to Simms Center Event

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Some area high school girls will now have the chance to attend their prom, thanks to a prom dress giveaway at the Lucy F. Simms Center.

Volunteers from a sorority at James Madison University helped set the gym up with dresses and accessories.

The volunteers also helped collect nearly 100 dresses. This is the first year this event has been held and organizers say dozens of girls came to try on dresses.

"Because a lot of people can't go to prom because of the fact that they can't afford to pay for a dress, pay for something and look nice. So having everyone volunteer and donate these dresses to them, and helping them pick them out for whatever looks nice between two different dresses, is really nice," said Lindsey English, a volunteer with Sigma Gamma Rho sorority.

Local businesses and people also donated to the event. Some girls will have the chance to have their hair styled if they won a raffle.
