AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV)-- This is an issue that has our community divided. Now, Congressman Bob Goodlatte is weighing in. He visited Augusta County on Jul.28 and spoke with business and community leaders.
Immigration reform is an issue in which the Congressman has had an active role in pushing.
He shared with the crowd that the kids held at this center need to be sent back to where they came. Even though there are many who say they should be given asylum in the U.S
"The sooner we can send them back home, the word will get out down there that this is a bad idea. They shouldn't make this dangerous journey, and they'll stay in their home countries," said Rep. Goodlatte.
The congressman reiterated that the juvenile center has had a federal contract for years to hold illegal minors. He says some of them have a legal claim and just need a safe place to stay while the claim is worked out.
