HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- A new Goodwill retail store is now open in Harrisonburg. It's is the second Goodwill in Harrisonburg and is replacing the store that was located on East Market Street. Goodwill leaders say the new location offers better viability and they hope it will serve the community well.
A tie-cutting ceremony happened at the store Wednesday morning to mark the new opening. The store was crowded from the moment it was open for business.
"It's really nice. It's much better," said Anne Reed, who stopped by for the grand opening.
"I like the cleanliness of it and the selection of items here," said Amy Fields, who also visited the store. "Very good I found some nice items."
Goodwill also tries to help with job training and employment programs. Store leaders say across their coverage area, which includes the Shenandoah Valley, Central and Southwest Virginia, they were able to help almost 90,000 people.
"Goodwill is sort of filling the gap that for some of the families that cannot afford to bring all their family members into one central location, and now they can use services like Goodwill," said Bruce Phipps, the President & CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Valleys.
A member of the Goodwill staff said these grand openings usually are pretty busy.
The new location also has a donation center in the back parking lot, which leaders say is more convenient than the old location.
