HARRISONBURG, Va.-- Carla Burrill has lived in Harrisonburg all of her life and is shocked to hear that graffiti that was found on West Wolfe Street in Harrisonburg, could be the work of gangs.
"Kind of scary, it's kind of scary to think there's a gang somewhere right here,” says Burrill, "I don't want to see that around my area, i have a handicapped son that lives here, I have grand babies, we're always out here cooking out and stuff and crazy things have happened in broad daylight or at night."
The markings which spell out, Y-R-B, were found on the side of houses, poles, a truck, and a fence in the area.
Lt. Chris Rush works with the Harrisonburg police department and says that they deal with many of these cases each year, so they cannot completely confirm that it is the work of gangs, but there are some things that lead them to suspect gangs could be involved.
"Some of the signs or symbols within the graffiti itself, some of it is the area that it has gone up in and us having knowledge or information of certain gang members either in that area or close to it," says Rush.
Either way, the crime is being looked at by their gang unit and they're determined to find who did this.
"They have people constantly on the streets that they're talking too, they're constantly monitoring social media to see if someone is bragging about this, talking about this, posting pictures on social media about it," says Rush.
Either way, Carla says that she's keeping her family close and will be more vigilant at night.
"I will keep my eyes open around my kids and around my neighborhood here..."
