Grammy Awards Celebrate Same-Sex Marriage

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- Sunday night's Grammy Awards had many people talking about more than just the music.

Millions watched as 33 gay and straight couples said "I Do" during the awards show; however, the show brought up a long heated debate here in Virginia regarding same-sex marriage.

"It came across last night as very bigoted, and very, very hate felt," said minister Brad Huddleston, who said that Sunday night's performance offended him and many others.

"It was quite militant, very intolerant, and there was a lot of hate speech in there because there are a lot of references in the rap song in particular against conservative Christians," Huddleston explained.

Mary Stern, a social worker and member of PFLAG, a non-profit that supports LGBTQ+ rights, thinks this will help raise support for gay rights in Virginia.

"It lets people understand that the majority of our citizens accept this as a natural part of human development and that in terms of civil rights and legal rights, we should move forward," said Stern.

Stern thinks moments like those at the Grammys will eventually happen here in the commonwealth.

"In Virginia, I think we are at a historic moment for change right now and I think it's good to be alive to witness this," said Stern.

Two gay couples, here in Virginia, have filed a lawsuit stating the states ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.

Their plan is to challenge the ban in federal court.
