AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. -- A Staunton man has been missing for more than a month after he went for a hike in Augusta County. The sheriff's office called off the search after five days of looking, but a new effort from some fellow hikers could change things.
Robert Fitzgerald went missing in mid-November. Deputies said he went for a hike in the Shenandoah Mountain and later returned. They said he lost his cellphone during that hike and then went back to look for it. He never came back after leaving a second time to find his phone.
The group rekindling the effort to find Fitzgerald call themselves “Valley Hikers.”
On Dec. 29th the Valley Hikers will meet in Staunton for a briefing session with the Augusta County Sheriff. They will then spend all day searching for Fitzgerald.
You can call 540 294 2374 if you are interested in volunteering to join their effort.
