BRIDGEWATER -- A group in Bridgewater is practicing their dulcimer skills, part of a beginners dulcimeer workshop at the Bridgewater Retirement Community.

The dulcimer is a stringed instrument. The Blue Ridge Dulcimer Club helps put on the workshop. They hold one the first Saturday each month.

Jan Scanlan is a member of the club. Her husband makes dulcimers. The dulcimer, Scanlan said, is an instrument rich in culture, going back to settlers on the frontier.

"It is a uniquely American instrument," Scanlan said. "They were remembering these instruments from home, and eventually a dulcimer as we know it developed."
