HARRISONBURG-- Tuesday kicks off the first day of the Harrisonburg International Community Celebration. It's 13 days of bringing the community together, and celebrating its diversity.
It starts with a culinary tour around area restaurants that offer ethnic foods, like Irish food, Italian food, or Vietnamese food. The restaurants are offering lunch and dinner specials.
In light of recent events that have happened, including a Mosque and Christian school being vandalized, event organizers say they hope the celebration will help the community come together, and realize those events don't define the area. "To be able to begin to see that people, you know, reject that kind of behavior, that kind of disrespect, disregard for other people's perspectives and world views, I think happens in places like this, where we can come together," said David Kreider, who is on the planning committee.
To drive that point home, there is a public movie on court square on Friday called "Praying for Change: Peace Through Music." The International Day is on Saturday at noon in Hillandale Park.
