HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV)-- Following Monday's school shooting in Nevada, school administrators in the Valley are being reminded that safety is a top priority.

The shooting happened at Sparks Middle School in Reno. According to students, another student opened fire and killed a teacher.

"I think it was unfortunate that it was a student, I would hope that, that student could be identified before that happens," said Craig Mackail, the Executive Director of School Safety with Harrisonburg City Public schools

Superintendent Dr. Scott Kizner sent out a letter to parents on Friday, urging them to speak up about any safety concerns they may have within or outside of schools.

"If at any time you are aware of or have concerns about your child's safety, especially as it relates to the school environment, I hope you will bring it to your child's principal's attention immediately," said Kizner.

"You can't walk into our building without going through the main office and when you do that, you check in and you sign in as a visitor," said Mackail.

But what about people on the inside?

One parent who did not want to be on camera said her concern is emotionally unstable students.

"Prevention is the thing we focus on. A lot is identifying the kids that may need help or (are) showing signs or all those things, so we do those in our buildings," said Mackail.

Many parents say they are comfortable with the safety measures currently in place.
