HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The City of Harrisonburg announces that construction has begun and the pace will soon be picking up to beautify another section of downtown Harrisonburg.

“Our Next Steps,” or Phase 2 of the Harrisonburg Streetscape Project started last week with the selected general contractor, Faulconer Construction, boring test holes. These holes provided insight as to where the signal mast arms will be installed as well as providing subsurface information necessary for the design of their foundations.

This week, July 14 through July 18, an electrical contractor will begin work to install junction boxes on the southwest corner of Bruce Street. Surveying may also be done along Main Street.

This work will not impact pedestrian traffic along Main Street but will have minimal impact along Bruce Street.

Crews will be removing small amounts of concrete in the Bruce Street area to work on the junction box installation.

Later in July and through the beginning of August, conduit and duct bank installation within the roadway will occur at nighttime to lessen the impact to motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

It is anticipated that this beautification project will be complete by the end of 2014.
