HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- If you live in Harrisonburg, you may become familiar to the police officers that patrol your area starting Wednesday.

It is part of geographical policing, an effort by police to increase safety, by assigning officers to specific areas in the city.

The map shows the seven districts the city will be divided into.

Previously, it was divided into only four.

Now, each district will have up to five officers and one supervisor.

You will see the same officers patrolling, responding to calls in your area and they may also be in your backyard for community meetings.

Lt. Kurt Boshart said this will benefit everyone, "The officers get to understand better what is going on in their community because they have a small region that they are responsible for, so having that they can be more involved with the community, as it grows as it running on a daily basis."

You can call the Harrisonburg Police Department to find out which officers will patrol your area.
