HARRISONBURG, Va.---The Harrisonburg Police Department did not receive a grant to increase rapport with Latino communities.

The Latino Neighborhood initiative grant would have helped identify Latino neighbors' views of police. It would have also add a community resource office and teach HPD officers Spanish.

Corporal Stephen Craver said this will not have a negative impact in the department.

"We will continue to strive to bridge the gaps in communications, culture, and trust with all of our immigrant communities in Harrisonburg as we move forward with our focused approach to community policing," said Craver.

According to Craver, the department didn't receive the money because of the intense competition of the grant.

"We will continue as an agency to seek out additional funding opportunities to supplement existing programs and create new ones as we are able," Craver said.
