Harrisonburg Voted One of Best College Towns

HARRISONBURG, Va. Harrisonburg was recently voted one of the best college town in the nation, according to Travel + Leisure magazine.

According to the magazine, bikes and beers are a major draw to the Shenandoah Valley.

Harrisonburg staples like Three Brothers Brewing and Capital Ale House, have helped revitalize the downtown area.

The combination of these breweries with the Valley's great biking trails, makes for a great college town.

Bill Wyatt, the associate director of communications at James Madison University, said that over the past couple of years, the university has worked closely with the downtown area to break down the stereotypical college bubble.

One thing JMU does is hold orientation in Court Square to get students familiar with the downtown area.

"I think it is a great opportunity for the mutually beneficial relationship between the community and the university for people coming from suburban or urban areas to see this university nestled in the Shenandoah Valley and it's very different and I think people are pretty impressed with it," said Wyatt.

Wyatt said, this is not the first time Harrisonburg has received recognition, it was also ranked as one of the safest communities in the nation.
