Harrisonburg is giving residents an extended tax break for putting solar panels on their property.
There were concerns expressed that adding solar panels will increase property values and thus increase property taxes for residents, which would give them an incentive to not use solar energy.
However, after much debate Tuesday night, the city council decided to make the solar equipment exempt from property assessments for 20 years.
The ordinance passed with a 4-1 vote.
