Hearing Held in Vt. Same-sex Custody Dispute

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A closed federal court hearing is being held in the case of a pastor convicted of helping a woman her daughter flee the country rather than share custody of the girl with her former lesbian partner in Vermont.

Kenneth Miller of Stuarts Draft, Va., had been ordered to appear Thursday before a federal grand jury in Burlington. The 47-year-old Miller tried to fight his appearance, but lost.

The unscheduled closed-door hearing was being held before U.S. District Judge William Sessions.

Last summer, Miller was convicted of charges he helped Lisa Miller and her daughter flee the country rather than share custody of the child with her former lesbian partner of Fair Haven, Vt. The Millers are not related.
