WASHINGTON (AP) -- Heavy rains closed some roads and downed trees in the mid-Atlantic region overnight.
The National Weather Service says two to four inches of rain fell in some areas of the greater Washington D.C. area and more showers and chances of thunderstorms are possible Friday in the already saturated region. Flash flood watches and flood warnings are in effect for much of the area.
Fairfax County fire crews were called to a swift water rescue in Alexandria after a vehicle stalled near Newington and Telegraph roads early Friday. The Fairfax County Connector suspended all south county service after flooding trapped buses in the garage.
In Montgomery County, standing water closed the ramp from River Road to the Capital Beltway until crews were able to clear debris from a storm drain.
