HARRIONSBURG, Va The number of homeless students across the country is the highest it has ever been.

According to a recent study from the National Center for Homeless Education, there are 1.2 million homeless students in public schools nationwide. This is a ten percent increase from last year and a 75 percent increase since the start of the recession.

Harrisonburg City Public Schools had approximately 80 homeless students last year. The schools work with the families and allow them to ride the bus to the Salvation Army Shelter.

"I took the kids out a couple years ago to look at the lights and they said, 'Oh, can't wait to see the lights at our home,'" said Capt. Duane Burleigh from the Salvation Army. "That's where we were coming to, was back here. It makes you want to cry when you realize they're calling a homeless shelter home. But I'm just glad that we're here to give them a home."
