However, the investigation remains open and the Police Department still requests that witnesses to either the Chauncey’s fight or the subsequent hit & run crash contact officers working the case at any of the phone numbers in the original release.

The victim is still listed in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

A Waynesboro man is in critical condition after being involved in a hit and run. Police want your help to find the suspect.

The crash happened Saturday, July 19 at approximately 12:30 AM near Chauncey’s Smokehouse and Bar which is located at 2323 West Main Street in Waynesboro. The crash left a 28 year old Waynesboro man in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

At 12:40 AM, Waynesboro Police responded to the restaurant for a report of a large fight on the parking lot involving several dozen people. When the first officer arrived, he noticed one person had been struck and left in the roadway in front of the restaurant. According to a witness, at the scene, the victim was present at the fight and then ran into the road where he was struck by an unknown vehicle heading westbound. It is unknown at this point why the victim was in the road.

Additional officers arrived, including Augusta County Sheriff’s Deputies and Virginia State Troopers, and were able to stop the fight and shut down the road in order to help the victim. He was transported to Augusta Health and later airlifted to UVA Medical Center.

Although there were numerous people outside when the victim was struck, only a few witnesses came forward to provide information to the officers. It is also believed that some bystanders took property of the victim from the scene without notifying police.

The Police Department is requesting anyone with information in this incident is asked to call Sergeant R.B. Luzader at (540) 942-6684 or the Waynesboro Police Department at (540) 942-6675 or Central Shenandoah Crime Stoppers at 1(800) 322-2017. Information given to Crime Stoppers may be given anonymously.
