STAUNTON -- The NTSB continues to investigate why a commuter train in New York derailed, killing four and injuring dozens of others. But could crashes like that derail confidence in train travel everywhere?
According to Federal Railroad Administration statistics, there have been 1,286 train accidents through September of this year. Three have been fatal.
Local travel experts say train crashes get a lot of attention, but that the railroad is still a safe way to travel.
"You could get hit by a car walking across the street," said Lynette Miller, of Traveling Troubadours Cruises and Tours. "I think the averages for any kind of accident is very low, so people aren't very concerned about that."
Miller said she even has clients ask to take trains on certain trips.
