HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV)-- How can you apply for a Native American exemption?

Perry Crowder, a certified application counselor, is very familiar with the marketplace exchange website.

If you are a member of a federally recognized Indian tribes, you can qualify.

Crowder said those who are recognized already have subsidized health care and are therefore not required to purchase any commercial or individual insurance, "You can actually apply for an exemption certificate through the marketplace exchange or there would be a methodology on the individual's tax return where you can simply claim it to credit it that way."

Crowder said you need to claim yourself as a member of a tribe before April 2015, which is the last day you can file your taxes for 2014.
