Tax preparation experts say people should check for an education credit and that could apply to parents of dependent students.
Some larger items can be itemized, like interest on your mortgage. Non-cash charity donations can help with your return. You can also cash in on some employee expenses you're not reimbursed for, like buying work uniforms or dues to chambers of commerce or unions.
A tax expert said looking over your taxes can mean more money in your pocket.
“We can find all kinds of things that need to be fixed. Some they'll owe more money from, some they'll get more money back, some we'll just put our guarantee on,” said Judith Preston, a tax preparation expert.
Preston said she's helped people get back up to $12,000 in their tax returns.
