Icy Weather Impacts Electricity Costs

HARRISONBURG, Va. Heating generally accounts for the biggest usage for electricity in your house.

Graves Electric said they received double the amount of phone calls compared to the rest of the year, because of these icy cold temperatures.

They received more calls this year compared to the same time last year.

Christian Brown, the project manager for Graves Electric, said, a majority of their calls come from too many space heaters in the same area which can trip the breaker, cutting off electricity in that area. Instead, he suggests limiting the amount of appliances you use.

Furthermore, he said it is important to block colder air from coming inside your home as much as possible.

"You can stop the air leakage from escaping from the house with help. They make a thin plastic you can put over the windows to help that air from escaping. The less air movement you have, the more heat that will be maintained inside the house," said Brown.

Brown also said the biggest tip he has is to keep your thermostat at one setting, instead of moving it up and down, which should help cut down on your electric bill.
