HARRISONBURG -- The use of illegal fireworks this Independence Day was lower than past years.

The City of Harrisonburg only received a few complaints this year. All fireworks in the city are illegal. Assistant Fire Marshal Bill Smiley said he confiscated only one set of illegal fireworks. He said the city didn't hand out any citations.

"Hopefully the word is getting out that in Harrisonburg you can't have fireworks of any type. That's making people think twice about buying them because they can't set them off in the city," said Smiley.

Smiley said he had to talk to a few people about not setting off fireworks but didn't catch anyone in the act.
