PAGE COUNTY -- Renter's and homeowner's insurance can be an investment that saves money. Fire Dept. Chief Terry Pettit wants you to know how it can help.
The Stanley Fire Department responded to a fire in Page County Tuesday night which completely destroyed the home. This is one of about 40 house fires they respond to a year. People don't have homeowners or renter's insurance in half of these cases.
Renter's insurance can cost a little as $100 per year. The cost of homeowner's insurance depends on the location of your house, the size of it and what you do to protect it.
Chief Pettit said a house fire can affect more people than the family.
"It will happen. Eventually it will happen. It doesn't always happen to you, but they always happen to everybody sometime in their life. You need to be prepared for it, and insurance does that," Pettit said.
An insurance company representative said a lack of insurance can be a problem in college towns. That representative said some college students don't have insurance because they think it's too expensive.
