HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Break-ins typically increase during the winter season, but in 2013, the number of commercial burglaries was even higher.
The Harrisonburg Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division is working to find a trend into the types of businesses that are victims of break-ins.
In 2012, Harrisonburg had 12 commercial break-ins during the holiday season; however, in 2013, Harrisonburg had 20.
Sgt. Jason Kidd, who works in the Criminal Investigations Division, said they've seen a trend in the types of commercial break-ins.
Many have been at doctor's and dentist's offices.
Kidd said, these are locations where there is a perception of lower security and access to petty cash.
The crimes also tend to be later in the evening.
Kidd said, there are some safety measures that should always be taken to prevent becoming a victim.
First, make sure safety security is working properly.
Second, proper lighting is also important.
Finally, make sure shrubbery isn't overgrown around the entry points of a business, like windows.
