STAUNTON, Va. -- In a tradition that started three years ago, students at Mary Baldwin College are learning about Islam this week. They are learning about Islamic traditions, like food and dress, as part of a culture appreciation week. Program organizers also focus on the role of women in Islam.
“We really want to promote inter-cultural competence among our students and make sure that they can look at different cultures and understand the differences and have an appreciation for them. That's all we're trying to do is promote cultural learning,” said Rhea Vance-Cheng with Mary Baldwin College.
The students plan to visit a mosque in Harrisonburg to wrap up Islam Awareness Week.
