Harrisonburg, Va. (WHSV) -- James Madison University is celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a week long of events that they hope will bring the college community together.

Thursday students and staff of all races met to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and the progress that the Harrisonburg community has made with the renaming of Cantrell Ave. to Martin Luther King Jr. way.

Many older speakers remembered the times when segregation was normal in this country.

"It was basically to inform people about MLK and the great works that he did. It was also a way for us to show that we haven't forgot," said Daniella Roberts, who is the Co-chair of MLK week at JMU.

MLK week at JMU ends on Monday with the dedication of the new Martin Luther King Jr. way.
