STAUNTON -- The two-day trial for Jonathan Van ended in a mistrial.
Van was accused of shooting Orlando Barber in the leg during a fight in Weyers Cave in 2011.
Jurors deliberated much of Thursday afternoon before reaching a guilty verdict for unlawful wounding. Jurors could not reach a decision on a sentencing recommendation, leading to the mistrial.
Van says he was the victim of a vicious beating and that the shooting was in self defense. The commonwealth's attorney argued the shooting was with malice.
Van remains free on bond. Another scheduling hearing in the case is set for July 22.
