PENN LAIRD, Va. (WHSV) -- Spotswood High School's Josh Lasam is always ready to step up to bat for his team.
"I've been playing baseball since I was little. Ever since I picked up a bat, I fell in love with it. It's just really fun to play," said Josh.
Which is why he has stuck with it; the love of the game has kept him versatile. He has been learning everything about the sport that he can.
"Coach Davis really wanted me to be a leader this year. If they need me to get three hits or pitch seven innings or make all the plays in the field, I'll do it," said Josh.
"He's played just about every infield position besides first base. He has pitched, so he is very versatile and he's a huge part of our team and like I said, Josh brings more to the table because he shows by example," said Marcus Davis, Josh's baseball coach.
Josh's teammates look to him for his focus and if things get down, he stays cool, calm and collected.
"It's just staying focused. I don't really get too wound up or get too low. I stay in the middle and stay focused. That's when I play my best," said Josh.
That focus lets Josh compete in other areas other than just baseball.
He is a standout star in basketball, leading the Valley District in three-point shooting percentage and he is also a leader in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA.
"Josh is always prepared. I love the example that he sets because he's always focused and he wants to do a good job. I can always rely on him. He's reliable and responsible. He's the dream student," said Julie Cassetta, one of Josh's teachers.
Next year, Josh plans to attend one of the area colleges to study business. He would also like to play baseball or basketball wherever he goes.
"Oh, I have no doubt that Josh will be successful in college and in his future career. He has strong values. He has a strong work ethic and he cares about everything that he does," said Cassetta.
