July Fourth Travel Preview

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV)-- With 41 million people expected to hit the roads this week, VDOT is putting the brake on interstate and highway construction. They are also opening up most lane closures in hopes to relieve travel headaches.

Due to the high volume of expected traffic, lane closures will stop July 3 at noon and last until noon on Monday.
VDOT's safety service patrol will also be on duty over the weekend in an effort to keep the roads clear of accidents.

Many other states will also be stopping roadwork just for the holiday. George Cook is heading to Florida to see his daughter. Travelers from everywhere appreciate any help they can get.

"I think anytime they can improve the travel conditions especially for the folks that are touring the area, areas that they can get away from the truck traffic, that's always going to be a plus, and many times it will open up a lot more scenic opportunities," said Cook.

Cook said he's traveling I-81 to avoid busy 95. If you want a look at current travel conditions, you can visit 511Virginia.org.
