STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- On a day when many united to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one group tried to tear his legacy apart.

A store owner in the Valley found a flier that appeared to be an invitation from the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

Similar fliers were first seen in Chesterfield Sunday, and by Monday, that hateful message spread to the Valley.

"I have a dream that my four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the contents of their character," said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his famous "I Have a Dream Speech."

"Came in a Ziplock bag like this. I think the ball is just to give it some weight," said Carey McCallum, describing the bag in which he found the flier from the KKK.

McCallum is the owner of The Sacred Circle, a store which promotes diversity.

"Kind of had a mix of shock and anger and pity I guess at the ignorance it represented," said McCallum, describing the emotions he felt when he first saw the flier.

On the flier there is a number to call for those interested in joining the Loyal White Knights of the KKK.

"Is this the kind of man we want to hold up to our children and to be honored as a national hero?," said a representative of the Loyal White Knights in an automated message.

The message went on for more than two minutes and contained disturbing language.

"For more info on Martin Lucifer Coon go to our website," said the representative in the message.

The website invites only pure white Americans who are against communism and interracial relations to join.

"I think people need to abandon racism, because it's a dead end," said Aaron Barmer, who found one of the fliers while walking in Downtown Staunton.

The flier has left many surprised.

"Especially when people have gone through so much to make sure people have equal rights and have equal opportunities," said Patrick Harris, a student at Mary Baldwin College.

WHSV was able to get in touch with the Loyal White Knights of the KKK, the group that posted the fliers.

They stand firm on their beliefs and have agreed to an interview at a later time.
