HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Students may think their apartments are safe during winter break, but there are risks, like burglaries, over long those long breaks. These risks can easily be prevented by taking just a few safety precautions.

Police say to make sure your windows and doors are locked.

You should also keep a current phone number on file with your landlord in case of emergencies.

The most important thing is for you to be aware of the potential risks.

"Only residents can get in the building, but even a resident who may be here while you're not and they know you're not here could take advantage of that situation," said Lauren Mason, a marketing specialist at 865 East.
