One of the Last Remaining Marine Corps Colonels to Survive Battle of Iwo Jima Dies

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WHSV)-- Shelton Scales, one of the last remaining Marine Corps colonels who survived the Battle of Iwo Jima, passed away.

Scales lived in Martinsville for years, and he was described by friends as kind and engaging.

A man who served with Scales said he had four landings during World War Two, with his last being in Iwo Jima.

Many of his friends said Shelton inspired young Marines, and his message was always to 'be yourself'.

Shelton Scales was 97 years old.
