MT CRAWFORD -- George Jones, a legendary country music star, passed away in a Nashville hospital on Friday morning at 81 years old.
He announced his farewell tour in November. He was supposed to make a stop in the Charlottesville area soon.
More than 160 of his songs hit the charts. That's more than any other pop music artist.
Jones may be gone, but his music will live on forever. Jones will always be known as a country music hall of famer.
A local country music radio station played his music for decades and on Friday, WSIG radio DJs played Jones' songs in honor of passing. Listeners called into the station, some even crying on the phone, to talk about Jones' life. Many of them said that he was one of the top artists who defined country music.
Jonathan Ruppel (J.R.), a DJ at WSIG, said Jones will not be forgotten.
“You know that ache in his voice when he's singing songs about heartbreak, it's not something that's going to be equaled again. Even though he is gone in body, his music will live on,” said Ruppel.
Other DJs at WSIG said they plan to keep playing Jones' music.
