Local Little League Team Qualifies for State Tournament

GROTTOES, Va. (WHSV) -- For the first time in seven years, the Grottoes Boys All-Star Little League team is advancing to the state tournament.

WHSV visited a team practice Monday afternoon to see how they are preparing for their first tournament game on July 11.

"Before the games,we'd always do a prayer. We'd do a couple swings in the cages and then warm up sharply most of the time," said Luke Keister, the shortstop.

It wasn't easy for the boys representing Grottoes to make it this far.

"Last team we played was Front Royal. We had to beat them two out of three just to get to states and we slaughtered both of them so I feel pretty good about going to states," said Dalton Nicely, the second baseman.

Regardless of the dominant wins, the team is still working hard to prepare for the upcoming tournament.

"We've been doing good because of our defense and hitting. Our defense has been really good. We've only had about five errors in this whole thing," said Hayden Lutz, the catcher.

Besides his teammates, Luke says there's an extra group of people that are important to the team's success.

"About the fans, they've been coming out to all the ball games saying you all have been playing great, you all have been doing good, so I salute my fans," said Luke.
