HIGHLAND COUNTY -- The state health commissioner awarded a Valley nurse as Virginia's public health nurse of the year. She was chosen out of four candidates by region in the state.
The award went to Cathy Halterman, who lives in Highland County. For years, she's worked to solve health problems and to educate and empower people about health issues.
On Thursday, her family and friends got to see her awarded state nurse of the year, which is something Halterman still has a hard time believing.
"Very surprised. Almost unworthy, because I feel like there are a lot of nurses out there that are just as worthy of this award as I am. I couldn't have done it without my coworkers or the support of my family," said Virginia's Public Health Nurse of the Year Cathy Halterman.
The ceremony is held during National Nurses Week, which started May 6th and ends May 12th.
