HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- After the mall shooting in Maryland, local police are talking about how officers handle active shooter situations. Locally, the Harrisonburg Police Department does have an officer assigned to patrol around the mall.

Officers are trained yearly on how to handle active shooters. The Harrisonburg Police Department also hosts advanced S.W.A.T. school yearly.

Officers and deputies from around the Commonwealth go through scenarios, including handling an active shooter like the one in Maryland.

"Our officer that's assigned to that area is pretty familiar with everybody out there and they know him.. We encourage anyone if they see anything suspicious to always call in to the police department and report suspicious activity," said Sargent William Keller.

The department also has an IRAD system, which helps to dispel crowds in chaotic situations.
