ELKTON-- A local quarry company has added its fourth plant. Frazier Quarry, Inc. opened its newest plant on Monday.
The plant has been around for about 70 years. It offers a unique type of limestone with magnesium. The chemical is beneficial to farmers because it neutralizes acid in soil.
Because of the location in eastern Rockingham County, it offers farmers in that area a convenient location to benefit from the services of the quarry.
The aglime, which is the limestone ground up, is unique to the region.
"Aglime is kind of a hidden jewel of the Shenandoah Valley. The only Limestone in Virginia is in the Shenandoah Valley, and once you get east of the Blue Ridge, where the predominance of crops are grown in Virginia. There is no limestone, so there is no source of aglime," said Bibb Frazier, the owner. "So we're exporting a piece of Rockingham County to Eastern Virginia."
The fourth generation company has about 40 employees and could add more in the new year.
