ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- Across the country and locally, rescue teams say the number of volunteers is down.

Hose Company No. 4 is trying to get the word out that they need more volunteers.

Libby Orebaugh is in charge of the volunteers at the company and said after having 40 active members last year, the number has dropped to 30.

At the same time, the call volume has increased from last year by about 20additional calls.

Right now, their response time is between two to four minutes; however, with fewer volunteers, the time may increase.

"Without the volunteers to do the responding to the emergency calls, quality of response will be down, quality of service will be down and that's not what the community wants," said Orebaugh.

Orebaugh said, you do not need to have training to join. They provide all the training you need.

Even if you don't want to be a firefighter, she said there are many other ways to help the department.
