ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va – Gov. Bob McDonnell asked the panel for recommendations after dozens of exotic animals escaped from a private zoo in Ohio last year. That incident forced police to hunt down, and kill 50 of those animals.
The Harrisonburg Rockingham County SPCA had a python turned in after the snake was hit by a car. Incidents like that raise concerns because many people don't have the proper background to care for exotic pets.
"I think everyone is concerned about private ownership of exotics. But it's for the reasons I mentioned personally, we are concerned about their welfare and well being," said Anne Anderson, the executive director of Rockingham County SPCA.
The recommendations now move to the desk of Gov. McDonnell and the General Assembly as they decide on new regulations for exotic pets.
