HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The Virginia Interfaith Power and Light group and the Sierra Club have recognized a local University.
Eastern Mennonite University was recognized on Earth Day for the work they have done to increase energy efficiency and share their sustainability projects with the rest of Harrisonburg.
Community leaders and students met to celebrate the green efforts made around the Valley. Kate Addleson, the program manager of the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club, said the goal of the event was to increase public awareness and continue improving energy efficiency around the valley, by encouraging green projects moving forward.
"Here in Virginia, we really are falling behind our neighboring states but there is so much positive activity happening at the local level that we are hoping more of our public officials, businesses and residents will recognize how great these opportunities are," said Addleson.
Eastern Mennonite University's Sustainability Coordinator said since 2000, the school has saved more than $2.5 million in energy costs.
