A special group in the Valley helps military families put their loved ones to rest. The Dayton American Legion's firing squad has a special way to honor families during a tough time.
Gunshots are the final honor for a veteran being laid to rest. In the Valley, the Dayton American Legion's rifle squad is the only group that can offer the service.
Squad Commander Jack Ridder is very proud of the unit.
“This is kind of a final tribute to the veterans and their families, just to recognize them for the service they have provided our country,” said Ridder.
Since forming last spring, the squad has been in high demand. They have fired at more than 120 funerals around the Valley.
That can certainly make the job an emotional one.
“If it's a veteran we know personally, or a veteran who is a member of the Legion in our post, it can be. Particularly, when taps are played, that can get a little emotional for people.”
It's especially that way as they gather the cartridges for the family to remember their loved one.
The only compensation they need is the thanks from the ones they serve.
“I enjoy giving that service to the families. A lot of people appreciate what we do. It gives you a good feeling.”
