AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. -- This week, the city of Harrisonburg talked about plans to demolish Mabel Memorial Schoolhouse after July 1 in a report published on Tuesday, May 7.
The city owns the property and is expanding Lucy Drive as part of the Reservoir Street project.
But now, a man named Adam Brink is trying to move the house instead.
Brink is planning to move the Mabel Memorial Schoolhouse all the way to his home, which is about four miles past Bridgewater in Augusta County.
Brink said his brother-in-law saw a posting about the schoolhouse on Craigslist in March and since then he has been talking to the previous owner about moving it.
He plans to move the home with the help of friends and family.
Brink has extra land on his property with a septic system that could be used for another structure.
Brink said he was drawn to the ad because of the threat of demolition.
"I was really excited to help the people get the property, or to get the house in particular not to be demolished but to actually use it for something useful. I don't happen to believe that emminent domain is the right way to go, and so having it somewhere else, being able to move it to my house, I've got plenty of land here, so I figured I could use it for a good purpose," said Brink.
The relocation process could take weeks or even months.
It all depends on when they get the permit from the city and how long it takes to move it.
Depending on whether they have to take the home apart, they may be looking for barn moving companies to help as well.
If they do move it, Brink said he may change it into a place for his in-laws, a church meeting place or a home school co-op.
