Schools and Rt. 29 Reopen in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Va. (WHSV)-- Earlier today, parts of Route 29 were shut down and schools were put on lockdown due to a standoff with police.

According to police, David Allen Cole, 42, entered Skyline Restoration with a gun, firing several shots. There are no reports of any injuries.

All of the people in the business were able to get out safely.

Cole pointed the gun at his own throat when he was confronted by law enforcement on the scene. Negotiators were able to get him to surrendered without incident just after 10 a.m.

He is curently charged with reckless handling of a firearm and an emergency custody order has been issued for an evaluation.

Law enforcement from three different areas, as well as state police, responded to the situation.

Route 29 reopened shortly before 11 a.m. and schools returned to normal as well.
