ABINGDON, Va. (AP) -- A Martinsville man has admitted federal charges that he falsely reported a gunman in January at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that Bryant Alexander Hairston entered his guilty plea Friday in U.S. District Court in Abingdon. While he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, prosecutors are asking for a minimal sentence. His sentencing is Sept. 9.

Hairston pleaded guilty to two counts of making false statements in regard to the Jan. 23 hoax.

Police said Hairston called 911 and reported seeing a gunman on campus. The bogus report prompted university officials to place the school on lockdown.

Hairston was a student at U.Va. Wise.
