HARRISONBURG -- Police say a man arrested in the Valley will go back to El Salvador to face aggravated murder charges.

ICE agents, FBI agents and investigators with the CHARGE unit arrested Jose Leonel Ramos Hernandez, 33, El Salvador. Investigators believe Hernandez was a high ranking member of Mara Salvatrucha, known as MS13.

Corporal Bryan Horowitz is the coordinator for the CHARGE task force. He said a lot of the MS13 gang members come to Virginia and make their way into the Valley.

"MS-13 actually began in the United States, then went back to El Salvador, and has become transcontinental. It's been a problem in Virginia in particular for over a decade. Northern Virginia has a severe problem with it and a lot of times, we see a trickle down effect from Northern Virginia as well as from California."

Hernandez had an active warrant for his arrest in El Salvador for aggravated murder. He was taken into ICE custody for illegal re-entry into the US.

When the federal proceedings are finished, Hernandez will be returned to El Salvador to face his pending charges.
